A website can have strong service pages, useful content and a healthy Google Ads budget, yet still struggle to appear in search results. Often, the problem sits beneath the visible page: Google cannot reliably crawl, understand or index key content. This technical SEO checklist helps business owners and marketing teams identify the issues that can quietly limit organic traffic and enquiries.

Technical SEO is not about chasing every warning in an audit tool. It is about removing obstacles that affect search visibility, user experience and the commercial performance of your website. The priority should always be the issues affecting important pages: services, locations, products, booking pages and lead-generation content.

Technical SEO checklist: start with crawlability

Search engines need a clear path to your important pages. If Google cannot crawl a page, it has little chance of ranking, no matter how well written it is.

Start by reviewing your robots.txt file. This file can guide search engine crawlers away from low-value areas such as internal search results, staging folders or duplicate filtered pages. It should not block key pages, CSS, JavaScript or image resources needed to render the site properly. A misplaced disallow rule can remove an entire section of a website from Google.
